How to put a hair extensions business plan together?
Two sisters living in Texas have the idea to work together. They want to put a hair extensions business plan together to start an online business. They are full of ideas and desire to start selling, but how will they start?
I like it when family members join forces and start to sell hair. I mean, sisters, mother and daughter or aunt together with her cousins start to sell hair. Often this creates a good team of people who connect. One party can focus on selling the hair and the other can take care of the logistical part of the business. Or to find hair suppliers.
Earlier this year I had an interview with Damaris and Devinn. This mother and daughter behind The Mint Hair Company could be a source for inspiration.
Manage expectations
To start your hair extensions store with another person requires you manage the expectations. I recommend to sit together and to discuss what the both of you expect of this venture. Think of:
- how important should the business be,
- some extra money next to a day time job or
- do you want to earn enough to pay the bills,
- will the both of you work the equal amount of time and is this reasonable,
- what if you must break up the collaboration?
Not necessary for bad reasons, but in life somebody might have a good reason to stop with a business. Because of family expansion or a new career opportunity, or after winning the lottery. It’s better to agree on this upfront instead to cross that bridge when you get there.
Put a hair extensions business plan together, the mission
The first talks should be about the mission of the business, why do we want to start selling hair and what is our goal. There should be a mutual understanding. Make sure to make notes, this will be the basic material if you put a hair extensions business plan together.
For whom you are in business, who will be your client?
Now you have clear:
- what you want to achieve
- in what time frame and
- how you will deal with a change in the collaboration.
The next talk should be about who you want to support. Who you want to feel good. In the beginning stay as close as possible to a part of the community you are familiar with. The better you understand the needs of your potential clients, the better you can market the hair.
If you understand how your potential clients gather information, you will be:
- successful in placing the hair they like (yours)
- front of them (the right social media or website)
- at the time they are ready for it (your publishing calendar).
Understand the needs of your clients
Perform a market survey. Make sure you use these first contacts with potential clients to build a relationship.
- hand over a business card,
- ask for their email address so you can inform them when you launch your store,
- connect with people online and comment on their pictures. Make sure to have your social media in place.
- use a name people remember and triggers people to visit your social media.
Here it comes. the hair
The market survey will show the needs your clients have about price, texture and quality of the hair. Now you can turn your back to hair suppliers and hunt the planet until you found the best supplier. It will be much easier to find the right supplier, because you know exactly what you need. The hair you need is what your clients buy as soon as you have it in store. At the right conditions, price, return policy and charges.
Put your customer in the middle of your company
When you held the market survey, you already started to market your business. Now you must increase your effort:
- start a blog to attract new visitors to your hair store,
- use social media to attract and
- connect with potential customers and to tell your story.
Tell them you are in business because you want your client to look and feel good. Be sure you place your customer in the center of your product offering.

Low self-esteem should not stop you from selling hair extensions
If somebody sign’s up for my newsletter, I always like to know what their biggest struggle is. I really appreciate if somebody takes the effort to sign up for my newsletter. The newsletter is in many cases the start of a new relation between you as a reader and me. And if people meet for the first time, it’s a good moment to start the conversation.
Everybody who new subscribes up receives a welcome short note as swift as possible after they sign up for the newsletter. In most cases I receive the same or next day a response.
What are you struggling with right now?
Every time I feel honoured when people share their struggle with me. Because I appreciate the confidence and trust, these mails get the highest priority to answer. Next to the fact it helps me to build a true relationship with my readers, it also keeps me informed about the topics, issues and worries my readers face and could be worth to write about to share it with a bigger audience.
A star player with low self-esteem
Today for example, I received a “what are you struggling with right now” response from Candy. In short Candy shared with me she was not feeling secure enough to start a hair business. She felt she was over thinking everything, despite the positive feedback she received from friends and family. She wanted everything to be perfect before she started, but her low self-esteem kept her from starting a hair business.
The way Candy shared her story and what she shared gave me the feeling this was a woman with passion to make others look and feel good. She was star player. If Candy could transpose this feeling to me only by writing an email, imagine what happens if she is selling her hair, by webstore, social media or in a salon!
I felt it would be a waste for the talents of Candy and all her potential clients if she wouldn’t start her own hair business. I shared with Candy my advice that it’s good to strive for perfection, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Also in the beauty industry. You will experience how well your plan will work, only after the launch of your business. There must be a moment, the planning will stop and the doing will start.

Black Friday was record breaking, online sales boosted and many shops predict big earnings. Great news, but what if the carts of your online store remained empty? What if for the last weeks or perhaps even months your sales lack behind? What if the stress wins from the passion? Should you give up if the struggles of selling hair extensions are too much, or continue to make you dream come true?
When stress kills the passion
When you started to make your dream, your idea to have your own hair extensions store, you felt the energy floating through your body. You woke up in the middle of the night and quickly wrote down another great idea to beat the competition. 1 Work that body
Hair extensions are all about the head, so make sure your head is fit, I mean make sure your brains are at top condition and able to deal with the struggle you face.
You can’t massage you brains, and I do not even want to think of that, but you can give your brains a boost if you do some exercise. Go to Gym, set up a schedule to do some work outs before you start your day. Make it your number one priority!
If you want to boost the effect of your work outs, set up a training schedule and try to beat yesterday’s performance. It’s unbelievable how beating yourself boosts your confidence. Start the competition and be the winner!
2 Understand what is causing the stress
Selling hair extensions is not a single task, it’s a combination of different responsibilities. You need to:
- have a good hair supplier,
- be able to connect with your clients,
- get enough people interested to visit your website,
- have a smooth payment and logistic process.
The first step is to identify what’s not working well. If you understand the cause of your lack of sales, or the lack of visitors you can focus on this. If you feel there are multiple reasons, focus on the most important one and deal with the other later.
This will be the issue you deal with after you finished today’s work out. Direct all energy on this topic and analyse exactly where it goes wrong. Fragment the issue into smaller steps, for example. Sales is the outcome of A the product, the hair extensions you offer and B the number of clients you have.
Now take it one step deeper, your hair extensions have a price component and a quality component. Analyse how your prices compare with the competition, and what about the quality? If people visit your website, do they see reviews, are your pictures original and showing the beauty of the hair.
Breakdown every step into two and investigate how you perform and what the problem might be and come with a strategy to improve.
By doing this you start to take control again, you are going to be master of the process again and this will give you energy again, Energy you need to get great ideas again to improve your sales! Now you will no longer wake up out of a nightmare, but with great ideas again to lift your passion!
3 Reach out to others
People are social animals, we need others to share our ideas with, to feel better and to get support from. Instead of locking yourself up in your house, you need to reach out to others. Talk to your hair stylist, join a group of young entrepreneurs in your community, start a blog to reach out to people in your target group, and do not forget social media. Be social, be interested in what struggles others people face with and feel the energy again.
Don’t you feel great if somebody knocks on your door for help and you can help that person? The boost of confidence if you see how another person who was sad before walks up straight again and leaves your house with a smile? I can tell you, this is a universal feeling, so why don’t you knock on the door of other people? Share your concerns and struggle and hear new ideas, new visions and other means of support. Perhaps they know somebody in need of good hair, or they have an uncle who is a re-tired marketing expert with time to help young entrepreneurs.
4 Don’t forget the most important person on earth!
Okay, you will only be happy if the sales goes up and the money pours in, but do not forget the most important person on earth, next to your clients and that’s you.
Take quality time, visit an exhibition, go to a concert, take time to paint or for any other creative activity that has nothing to do with your business.
Block time in your calendar and do not allow yourself to come with an excuse to work instead of having quality time. You do not only need it, you deserve it!
5 Challenge yourself
At school, you practiced for some new subjects, in the beginning you just did not get it, but every time when you understood the subject better, it was fun. When you passed the test with a high grade, you felt master of the universe. Or when you learned how to drive a car. So many things to think of in the beginning, the car, the people outside the car, the traffic rules, so many things and all moving at the same time. How will you ever learn? But you did and with every next class you improved.
Pick up a course or training, the structure will help you to amaze yourself about how smart you are and you will learn new skills that will make you improve in selling hair. You can even study online, for example Search Optimization for Beginners to get 1,000 visitors a day to your website to get a general idea about online marketing, or learn how to make drawing or any other craft if you prefer a hobby to relax more.
6 Do somebody a favour every day
You already read that helping others gives a good feeling, so it will not hurt you if you make it a recurrent task to help others. You can try voluntary work in your local community. If you lack the time, because now you must start to do gym, go out more, analyse your struggles and follow a training, try do somebody a favour every day. This can be a small thing, that puts a smile on the face of another person. And please do accept the thank you instead of waving it away. You earned it and it will make you feel good again.
7 Control your tasks
There are many things you should do on a day, but the smarter you work the better it goes. I used to work with CNN on the background and the kids walking my room in and out with important issues like what TV channel to choose or if they could have a small bite before dinner.
Now I lock myself in my room to focus on my tasks and, I prioritize the tasks in four categories:
- Those who bring in the money
- Urgent and important like handling a crisis or deadline
- Answering mail and phone calls
- Drinking coffee or social talk
In the morning when I am still fit, I focus on the first group and if time is left I handle the lower categories.
And remember, please always look for the bright side of life

Everybody wants a little love, to turn from victim to victor
Before you continue to read, please know this post is different from the others on this website. Today, I want to share with you some insight on voluntary work I do to help people who have been sexually abused in their childhood.
I love to share ideas and concepts to be different selling hair extensions, how to start your online business and to grow to a business big enough to earn a living. To talk with you on Skype or to chat on WhatsApp inspires me, and it’s great to be able to talk to so many different people, from all over the world.
Thanks to the shape of the planet I do not have a regular 8 to 5 job with HowToSellHairExtensions. I work in the middle of the night, early morning hours or sometime not at all.
Voluntary work
For me it’s very rewarding HowToSellHairExtensions leaves me time to give energy, inspiration and sometimes just some attention to the community. For a year now I am a voluntary board member of a foundation for victims of sexual abuse (SKIP).
In the Netherlands abuse was not only a practice in the Church, but also when children were under custody of foster parents and -houses. I fear by the way, the past sentence does not apply, and the risk of child abuse is still present today.
The foundation gives a platform to these victims, it lobbies with the government for financial compensation, for sharing information so the whole society can learn and hopefully detect child abuse in your environment in an early stage. But also, to receive funds to be able to organise meetings to empower people.
A year is a very short period, but I can tell you I have seen several people in that year who changed from victim to victor, thanks to the work of the Foundation. People who had their mind made up to give up this battle and to lock themselves up in their home. Who now organize events or shared their very intimate live story in a documentary on YouTube. Those people are the true heroes of our society in my eyes.
I feel honoured to be a spokesman for these people, because everybody wants a little love and sometimes this love turns you from victim to victor.
Everybody wants a little love
I can recommend you, if you have the time next to your business and perhaps day time job, to invest in your community. There are many people who can use your attention and love, and if we all turn somebody from victim into victor, our whole world will soon be truly great again!
