You know the demand for wigs is growing, and so many hair stores owners want to know, “how to price your wigs?”. There are a couple of things you must take into consideration to price your wigs. It is not only the material and the time it takes you to manufacture the wigs. You also need to know how much money your client is willing to sacrifice for your tailor-made wig. Read now, step by step, how to calculate the best price for the wigs you want to sell at a nice profit.

Retail and wholesale pricing strategy

When you sell wigs, hair extensions or other hair products, you need to have a strategy to manage the price. You start with some basic calculations and assumptions, but then you adjust this to get the best price at the highest turnover. There is no difference between a retail strategy, or wholesale pricing strategy. Retail is when you only sell to private individuals and wholesale is when you sell Business to Business or B2B. The market is different, but the steps to take are similar.

Work with a discount on the prices for your wigs you calculated with the Basic Pricing strategy. Make sure the offer has a time limit, so clients understand it is a now or never deal.
Loss Leader Pricing Strategy for Wigs
This time you pick one kind of wig that is cheap compared to the rest. But the wig is basic. People see the cheap wig first and offer other more complete wigs, but higher priced.
The number 9 Pricing Strategy for Wigs

How to price your hair bundles is different from wigs

If you know how to price your hair bundles, you should realize the price of wigs has other elements. For example, there is much more material needed to create the wig. Time has also a value

The time you or a co-worker needs to design and make a wig, should also be added to the price of the wig. Even if you are the owner and nobody else is involved in making the wigs. You could have used the time to educate yourself, or to have another job. Here the system is, you calculate the time you need to make a wig and the hourly rate you could get when you work in a supermarket, at the hospital or as a model. Calculate the time you need for the wigs times the hourly rate and add this to the price of the hair, the material and the depreciation of the tools and machines.

How to price wigs

Now you know the cost price of the wig. Now you can analyze the wig market and see what similar wigs, made by the competition, are priced. Online it is not easy to see if the quality is comparable, but look for comments on social media to get a feeling of the quality of the wigs. What do others say about the wigs? Now you know how you can price your wigs. Combined with one of the other strategies, you can be sure your wigs will not only fit well on the head of your client, but they will also fit well in her budget!

I am selling my hair, that was the message Quyen from The Netherlands was telling me on WhatsApp. Quyen has the Vietnamese ethnicity and is the proud owner of 40 centimeter or 16 inches beautiful dark brown human hair.

When you talk about unprocessed, this is the real deal. Quyen has never dyed her hair, neither did she use any permanent chemicals. Virgin hair that is!

The last week I received more requests from people texting me “I am selling my hair; can you help me?” So, I realized more people are looking for ways to sell their hair and I decided to help Quyen.

The condition of the Vietnamese hair

Today, it was a foggy autumn day in The Netherlands. I cleaned the garden a bit, removed some cobwebs at 6 meter high in the hall and worked on some projects for my clients.

Sometimes I believe Lydia never sleeps because she is always the first to response on any request, no matter the time of the day. She sells hair, is always looking for innovations. Plus, she is a mother of some very sweet kids. Her eldest daughter has been trying to teach me Chinese, but I fear I am not the best student.

Blog? What kind of people still read a blog in 2021?

A blog for my hair store? My clients do not read blog postings, they prefer to watch hair ideas on Instagram reels or YouTube. That is the response I get more and more when I recommend adding a blog to the webstore.

I must be honest, when my kids do not understand their homework, they prefer to check YouTube or TikTok. A good movie about science, biology or math helps them more than a book explaining the subject.

So, no need to invest time and money in publishing blogpost anymore to grow your hair store?

Well, this year’s survey done by marketing agency Demand Metric, show 77% of the people do still read blog postings. But, sometimes people do not even realize they are reading a blogpost when searching for a solution. When they read a page with hair care suggestions, they might not consider this as a blog.

When you create your ideal client profile, you can also check their behaviour on the internet. What do they prefer, a video or some text to read?

Realize when you use a video to explain how to maintain hair, people need to be able to listen. More than 80 percent of the people who watch a video off the sound. For example, because they are in a quiet room, are multitasking, or did not have their airpods with them. In that case a written instruction, like blog posting. can be very handy.

A lesson from Esther, one of my clients

I have been helping people a lot starting their own hair business, or to build a hair webstore for them. The advantage is when we discuss the business plan, there are always ideas you can learn from. Sometimes ideas that come from another business than the hair and beauty business.

When Esther and I discussed the home page for her store she wanted to add a combination of sales, information, and entertainment. She has a marketing background in retail, and she understands people are not always searching for a bundle deal to buy. They might be browsing through the internet looking for some information about how to maintain your hair. Or they want to see some images of nice-looking hair. Here a blog comes in, and don’t you agree there is no better medium to share trends, tricks, and information?

Blog to rank higher

A blog helps to get your webstore ranking on Google. Google is still very text oriented. Your blog post will help Google to understand the topic you describe. Make sure you write about one specific topic, like the maintenance of wigs. People with interest in wigs and the maintenance will find your blogpost in their search results. Use the right keywords, make sure you add the keywords also in the title and headers of the post. This all helps to rank on Google. Add some images to make the blogpost look appealing and do not forget to describe the alt text of the image. Finally add some internal links to your products to help these products to rank higher in Google too.

This way, investing time in a blog pays off, because more people will find your website and the hair products.

Energy crisis is worldwide

We are all impacted by the energy crisis, this will also cause higher Hair Extensions prices. Some time ago, I told you about the increase of hair prices, and your clients will follow the prices of the competition, for sure. When they find cheaper hair, you might lose your clients!
First, the economic recovery in some countries, was quicker than foreseen, and this caused a shortage of raw material, but also a shortage of containers to ship the goods to the end consumer. This was the main reason to expect higher prices.

And now the energy crisis is driving prices up, perhaps not visible yet, but wait and you will see your hair vendors increasing the prices.

Production hair requires energy

For both human hair and synthetic hair, energy is used in the factories. For example, water to cleanse the hair, but also electricity for the sewing machines, and the light for the workers. When the hair is manufactured in from China mainly from coal-fired power utilities. And these energy companies are allowed by the government to charge their customer higher energy prices.

On top of this, in some regions the factories and businesses are forced to close their activities down, a couple of days a week. This way the government tries to manage the energy crisis, by power rationing. This increases the shortage of the product and again this will increase prices. Not only in China, but also in the other hair manufacturing countries.

These two measures, to allow coal-fired power utilities to charge a higher price and the lower production due to the forced closing, will have an impact on the price of hair extensions and wigs.

What can you do about the energy crisis?

At this very moment, it is not clear when the prices of hair extensions and wigs will increase due to the energy crisis, but there is no doubt it will happen.

To make sure you can keep selling hair to your clients at a competitive level, you can work on a strategy to look for alternative hair, perhaps add some Braids to your product offer. Or add an extra service to the products you sell, team up with a stylist and offer hair extensions and install as a one shop solutions. Your clients will save time, and money when they can buy the hair and get the install in the same location.

When you have a brick-and-mortar store, you can consider saving on your own energy bill and to close the store and start selling your hair and wigs online. This is much cheaper than selling in a store and you will reach many more people. So, less expenses and more potential clients! A good strategy to turn the energy crisis into a business opportunity!

What words do people use often for hair extension business names

You see a lot of own names in the stores, that of course is a unique word, and it is nice to put your name on the front of your store or in the domain name of you store.

More generic names, that also will tell the clients exactly what you have to offer are:

Hair 18%, beauty 6%, store or shop 4% and extension 2%. So nearly 1 out of five hair store names did indeed have the word “hair” in the company name. But also, the word “beauty “is used rather often, this is a promise you make to your clients. Very nice.

I do not know if you spent a lot of time to doubt of it should be store or shop, but these two words are used nearly the same number of times. So do not waste too much time on this.

Looking for relevant keywords, you can look at the favorite two words

Hair extension 1% or hair extensions 1%, hair beauty 1 %, hair shop 1% and beauty shop 0.4%.

The hair extension, without s is slightly more used, but you can use both.

How should your name start?

The most used letter to start is the letter S (nearly 1 out of 10 shops). This is thanks to words like Silky or Slay.
Followed by the letters M and B both with 8%. For M your competitors like words like Mama or Moma to start their hair business name. For B it will not surprise you Beauty is a great eye catcher for a hair store name.

The letter L with 7%. Is used for stores that try to let the client feel the hair when they see the name, think about lavish, luscious or Luxurious.

Hardly nobody started her store using the letters X, Y, Z or U., but a store name like “Your Dream Hair Store” your visitors will certainly remember.

Should you add your town in your name?
