User intent is in short, the reason why people search for hair extensions. This reason can be to buy or just to see images of hair extensions. At least not now. Thus, even when your SEO tool tells you “Brazilian Hair” has over 8,000 searches per month, this does not mean all these searches for hair have the same intent.

It is good your keyword, like “Brazilian Hair” is in demand but it only pays off when you understand what user intent is and how you can benefit from this insight when you design your website.

What search volume for hair extensions is not telling you

We are all focused on getting more visitors to our websites, the more the merrier, right? Too bad, but a high search volume is not always helping you. In fact, it can even hurt your ranking on Google when you have many visitors, but most of them bounce away.

This could be a newbie, interested to try a wig, but wants to learn more before she is buying one. She might bounce away from your site when she only sees information for people who are ready to buy.

At the other hand, when you give her the impression you know what you are writing about, she might come back to buy hair from you.

GO
“Go” queries are typically brand or known entity queries, where a visitor is looking to go to a specific website or location. Even when your hair looks nice, she will not stay on your website because she wants to buy hair from a certain brand.

So, good to aim at a high number of visitors to your website, but a high search volume is no guarantee you will get rewarded. Google might even punish you when you receive too many visitors with another user intent, who bounce away and cause your webpage to have a high bounce rate.

The user intent explained by the customer journey

Know you understand your webpages might attract the wrong kind of visitors, people who have a different intention. At least another intention than you when designing the webpage. But even for people who are to be considered as your buyer persona, or ideal client, it is possible they have another intention. Let me explain.

When your ideal client, wants to purchase something they follow the customer journey.
The awareness stage, realizing you need a new hair style, or just a change in your life.
The consideration stage, time to compare hair of different vendors or different types of textures.
The Decision stage, now you compare conditions like price and time to delivery.

Here you already see the user intent depends on the stage of the customer journey. You see the kind of information needed in every stage is also different. For the same keyword!

Ideal client tells you her intention

I recommend starting any website design with the client, your buyer persona. This is the ideal client that will always buy from you because you know exactly what she is looking for. When well performed your study about your ideal client will give you insight in her demographics, her background, her communication preference, and her pain points. Imagine a buyer persona that prefers to follow celebrities and their hair. When she is scanning the web, she is looking for this combination.

But when on the red carpet one of the ladies shows up with an awesome new hair style, she might change her thoughts about hair in seconds. The intention of your ideal client is not fixed for the next following months. This intention can even change on the spot when she is scrolling your website.

This makes it important to keep your webpages fresh with information that provide user value and topical relevance to your business offering.

Focus on user intent customer when you design your website

Now you know user intent is more important than only a high search volume for a certain key word it is time to put that into action.

When you design your website start with your ideal client. Know your ideal client from inside out. It is not always easy to understand her needs but please do. You will find many hair and fashion blogs using WordPress, but did you know there is also a hair website design for WordPress? How to start design a WordPress Website?

Before you start to design a webstore, you need to think well about, the:

  • ideal client you want to help finding her or his hair needs
  • mission and name of your hair store
  • hair products you are going to sell

Today, I want to take you to Belgium. Esther, the founder of HairProWigsandWeaves, had her own hair store in the medieval city of Ghent before and wanted to grow her business. But I can I assure you, Esther is really girl of the 21st Century! Esther approached me to design a hair website in WordPress.

We started to chat and call on the phone and the first step was to define her ideal client. Esther has a lot of marketing experience and knows how to sell hair. She preferred not to sell plain bundles and closures. She wanted to sell solutions for special people. Of course, the competition of stores selling virgin Brazilian hair is huge, but more important for her was she wanted to help people who needed some extra attention.

This made us decide to design the website around this target audience, but with a growth model. Many people knew Esther from her days as owner of a brick-and-mortar hair store, so we wanted to keep serving these clients too with bundles and hair pieces. In the meantime, Esther started her research to the needs of the clients with special needs.

The WordPress Theme

When you are using WordPress for website design you first select the theme. In our case we use Divi from Elegant themes. This theme works perfectly for website design with WordPress and WooCommerce. You can use for your website design WordPress templates or create your own pages.

The website colors

To create consistency, every page of the website should have the same color setting. We first picked one main colors for the website and used the adobe color wheel to find complementary colors for buttons, links and calls to action. Plus, an extra color to use to give some extra accent if needed. The challenge of colors is they seem to differ per device, especially on the various mobile devices. Check yourself with any color.

The structure

The design of the menu or navigation of the hair website was next. We combine the use of a header menu and a footer menu. But also buttons on the various pages to allow visitors to click direct to the page with the information they needed at the time. When you see the home page of HairProWigsandWeaves you can see the buttons for, products:

  • hair extensions
  • wigs and
  • trendy wigs

But also buttons for visitors who are not yet in the buying stage of the customer journey, we added buttons to see the:

  • care guide, about maintenance of the hair
  • size guide, to see how to measure the perfect wig and
  • color guide

This way Esther helps her visitors with the decision making process, without pushing them into a deal. The home page allows every visitor to find the information she needs when she is ready for it. You can see Esther has a mind that thinks of marketing all the time. How to give your client the proper information at the right time.

Next to the information about the hair, the visitor can find buttons linking to support pages about the shipping and delivery, return policy and customer service. Information a visitor needs when she has found the hair or wigs she likes, and want to know when she will get the hair.

WordPress footer menu

To avoid visitors must scroll back up, we designed a WordPress footer menu. Visitors have access to this menu on every page of the webstore. People prefer to click and scroll as little as possible, and with this footer menu Esther made that possible for her clients.

WordPress Shop

For the shop we kept is as simple as possible. Visitors can search for the collection they prefer on this WordPress shop by using a filter. But you can also easily click on the hair piece you are interested in. When the client clicks for example on the Diva wigs, she or he can find all the Diva wigs Esther has in store. On the image below you can enjoy all the bright colors Esther has to offer.

Hair Product Page

Every hair product page has a short description and a longer description. The visitor who can be a returning visitor might be less interested in the long product description. But for the newbies or the search engines it helps to share more details about the hair. Again, this shows the marketing expertise of Esther. On one webpage she brings the information for multiple target groups. Both people who are at the beginning of the customer journey and people who only want to place their order.

Clients can add the hair pieces or wig to the cart to continue shopping or they can pay right away using PayPal.

The about us page

Special attention I would like to ask for the about us page. The story of Esther and her HairProwigsandweaves store shared with her target audience. Esther loves hair and she did so since she was a little girl of 10 years old. But also, she tells her visitors about her days as a model experiencing bad hair days. The about us page has a section for every period of her life. This is a great way for your visitors to connect with you and to see who is at the other side of the internet connection.

The legal pages

The legal pages about privacy and the return policy follow the same structure. Using buttons to break the information into those paragraphs somebody is interest in.

All these elements you can use for your keywords and to draw the context about the product. It is good to write about selling hair, new websites to design and success stories, like about happy clients. But sometimes when I talk with my clients, I also hear things that hurt. Financial stress, or medical issues, problems in the family, or too much to do and too little time. This week was a week full of emotion, and at those moments having a call over the phone, or a chat via WhatsApp feels bad. Bad because you would like to hug and comfort the person on the other side of the line. But that is not possible. Not because of Covid, but because of the distance.

I get inspired by the stories my clients tell me

When you work together with people to design a webstore, or to support them with marketing or operational support, you do not only talk hair. You also talk about other things in life. Little things like the achievement of kids at school, the first English words of the 5-year-old from a Chinese supplier, or the stress in the stores because of limited inventory thanks to Covid. All this small talk helps to understand each other better and to get a better result. Better because you can laugh together, and now I understand life in Nairobi, Brussels, San Diego, Benin-City or Qingdao is all the same, we speak different languages, eat different food and sleep at different times, but we are all humans, all parent or family. For me it is one of the drivers to pick the phone and to talk with my clients or leads instead of chatting. I get inspired and I hope to inspire you on the other side of the line also.

But sometimes it’s like all the positive energy, all positive news fades away. Sometimes I hear stories that make me feel small, very small. Because I can not help the other. I feel pain when a young student from Kenya tells me her brother has covid in the same week her grandfather got a stroke. A girl, full of ideas, a girl that should enjoy life, but today is sad because of all the pain nearby. And what can I do? I can share her my compassion by sharing some inspiring words. I take some time, to pray for her and her family. But I also know I must keep faith in the Lord. He has a plan, and although it takes time we see, we need to have faith GOD will take care. But it is not easy.

And there was this call with an awesome woman from the US, she inspires me with her ideas about fashion and her lifestyle. Sometimes I even envy her because she followed what she felt. He also made me understand, I must do better, I must free up more time for the people around me to listen and to be there for them.

I can only listen and keep on praying

Moreover, the husband of one other client was having serious trouble with his lungs. After the lockdown, where she lost her daytime job, she found the love of her life and after a long time she got another job. Things were going uphill again! Until her husband got sick. And again, I can read her messages, I can hear her talk on the voicemail, I hear the energy floating away. But what can I do? I can only listen and tell her; I am always here for you. I pray to GOD to take care of her and her husband. And I hope one day I will be wise enough to understand what the message is, GOD gives me by having all these marvelous people around me. Who sometimes share small talk, sometimes share their pain but always like to talk hair!

I wanted to share my feelings with you, because although online webstores are full of technical stuff, there are real human beings behind it. Every visitor of your webstore has a story to tell. This week I was talking, or better chatting, with a client about her ideal client. I had myself well prepared and had a list of questions to dive in the soul of her Ideal Client. We started on the top of my list, and I wanted to go one by one till the last question. But although she was enthusiastic in the beginning, she started to share with me “The Ideal Client is complex”. And “This takes longer than I expected”. She understood it was important to know your ideal client, but she preferred to talk about the hair she wanted to sell.

I tried to convince her about the importance to start with her client, before we get to the hair vendors, but I felt she kept her reserves.

Too bad, because I have seen too many women forced to end their hair business because the beautiful hair they found was not in demand. It was fun to talk to the hair vendors, and to order some samples, but this is no market survey. Avoid listening too much to yourself when looking for hair for your clients.

How to make the highest profit selling hair extensions

Last week I was talking to a girl in France who had great news. She did not have a client buying her hair extensions for a long time. But this week there were two clients who placed an order. The only problem was …. she did not have the hair they asked for in stock. She knew a good hair vendor in Vietnam en she got the hair for her clients. Too bad she could not really get the hair for wholesale conditions because the order was too small. But she still made a profit! At least that was she thought until she and I did the calculations. She had forgotten to consider some costs like the import duties and the other store expenses. She had lost money instead! It was not nice to come to this conclusion, especially because it could have been avoided.

To avoid you make the same mistake, I created a hair profit calculator and published it on this website. For free you can calculate the profit you made on any deal you close. But perhaps even better, you can also use it to calculate the outcome of any deal before you buy the hair from your vendor or agree on the price for your clients.

Let me share with you how it works, so you know how you can make the highest profit selling hair!

How to calculate your profit when selling hair

When you want to calculate how much money you made or are going to make selling hair, you need to be sure you take all expenses and income into account. Let me take you step by step through this calculation. Let me start to advise you to use s only one currency when you do the calculations. Use your own currency and convert any amount paid in other currency back to your own. You need to make sure you can compare all revenue and cost items.

How much money you need to sell hair?

To calculate how much money, you need to sell hair you need to do some homework. The expenses are not only the price you pay for the hair from the vendor, but also:

    • the payment charge from the vendor
    • the shipping charge from the hair vendor

But also

    • the import duties you pay when you import hair from abroad plus the handling fee

And the

  • cost to keep your webstore online, like hosting costs or Shopify fee
  • advertisement cost on Facebook or Google
  • packaging material and other branding material
  • phone charges for calls with your suppliers
  • the depreciation of your phone and laptop

How much hair will you buy this year?

After you have calculated all the expenses for a full year, you must estimate the total amount of money you are going to spend in buying the hair to sell to your clients. So how much hair are you going to purchase from your suppliers. It is not easy to make this estimation, but you need it to make sure you have a profitable business that will continue to grow. It will for example help you to plan extra marketing activities when the sales are lacking behind. When you control your marketing and sales activities during the year, for sure you will reach your goals; the money you want to make selling hair, your profit!

Now divide the total expenses for your webstore by the total sales for the same period. This will give you the cost mark up. That is the cost you must add to every purchase of hair to make sure you cover all your webstore expenses. To make it easy, you multiply the division total expenses / total sales with 100 percent. This percentage you add to all your hair purchases. Indeed, it will make the hair more expensive than the price on the pricelist of the hair supplier. But at least you earn back the expenses you make doing business.

How much do you pay for the hair extensions

When you contact a hair supplier, they will mail or app you, their pricelist. This shows an image of the hair, the texture, lengths and size or density. And of course, the purchase price of the hair. Often there are additional expenses for a different texture or color (#613).

But there is more to pay. Most of the hair suppliers will charge you also for:

The shipping charges from hair suppliers

The shipping charges your supplier will bill you, will depend on the weight of the parcel and the kind of courier service you prefer. It can be beneficial to combine some orders, or to increase the level of your inventory and to save on shipping charges. When you buy hair in advance you can save on the more expensive but faster courier services.

But anyhow, the hair supplier will charge you for the shipping of the hair extensions or wigs.

The payment charges from hair vendors

Depending on the payment method, the hair vendor will charge you. For example, when you prefer PayPal, they will charge you with a 4 to 5 percent charge, because this will be the fee, they must pay to PayPal for receiving the order amount for the hair.
But and this is often forgotten when people calculate the profit, they make on selling hair, when you transfer the money by direct bank transfer or a service like Western Union you also must pay a payment fee. This fee you must consider too when calculating the purchase price of the hair or the cost of goods as it is called.

Other expenses when buying hair

It is possible the hair vendor is charging you for dying the hair, or to change the texture of the hair or any other service charge. These expenses you also must consider.

The cost of importing hair extensions or wigs

You can buy the hair in your own country, but when you purchase hair from China, India, or other countries, you must import the hair. Importing hair is bringing the hair from one country to your own country. This can be done by a courier, or your national post service. Or you can import the hair yourself.

Most countries charge tax or import duties when you import hair extensions or wigs, regardless if it is human hair or synthetic hair. It is important to inform yourself about the import duties before you calculate your selling price. It is possible you have not paid any import duties ever, but it is very likely one day you will have to pay these import taxes. Take these duties into account, together with possible handling fee charged by the courier or your postal services.

The price your client pays for buying hair

You have the price calculated following the various pricing strategies for hair extensions. You can find a post about these strategies on my website.
But it is possible your client negotiates a better deal, for her. Or your client wants hair that is not part of your collection, and you need to place a special order for these hair extensions. At these times it is very important to be sure of your negotiating room. How low can you go with your selling price to get the deal and to keep the client happy? How much you pay to sell hair?

In the beginning you learned about all the expenses for keeping your webstore online. But there are more expenses when you sell hair. You might be charged by your bank or ecommerce platform for the money you receive from your client. When you use PayPal, this time you will be charged with a fee from PayPal.

How much is the shipping when selling hair?

Unless you have a local pick-up point organized, most clients will receive their parcels by post or courier. Or perhaps you even hand over the hair yourself personally. In these cases, you must make expenses to ship the hair, these shipping or transport expenses you must consider when calculating your profit.

Can you charge your client for shipping the hair?

From a marketing perspective you can decide to offer free shipping. But this will impact your profit margin in a negative way. Good when you can make more sales when clients feel they do not pay for shipping, but you must pay for shipping anyway. You can consider offering only free shipping above a certain order amount. Below this amount you will charge shipping expenses to your client. It is a good way to sell more hair, because most people prefer to pay for hair instead for the postal services. The money you charge your client you can deduct from your expenses.

Can you charge your client for payment?

Yes, you can. When your client wants to pay you and you did not take the payment expenses for a specific service into account when calculating the price of the hair. You can charge them. But be careful, when clients feel they have not only to pay for the hair but also for everything that comes with it, they might bounce away. At the other side, when you prefer to offer the cheapest hair price as possible, like a discounter, you can charge for payment. When you receive money from your clients for payment services, you can deduct this when you calculate the profit you make when selling hair.

The sales tax you pay when selling hair

The tax you pay when selling hair is no income for you. You will have to collect this tax on behalf of the tax authorities. You will increase the amount of the invoice, but it will not increase your profit. You need to forget this amount when you calculate the profit margin when selling wigs or hair pieces.

Now you have all ingredients to calculate the profit, or loss, you made when selling hair extensions. The difference between the money you paid and the money you received will show your profit. Make sure you use the same currency for your calculations and do not forget the cost mark up for your other expenses.
